Hayao Miyazaki
I was out to dinner with some friends recently and one of my friends was talking about how much she hates the Disney Princesses. I have to say it is really hard to argue when you have a little girl, that just maybe they aren't the best role models. For some reason none of them have moms (more like evil step moms) and they disobey their fathers by trying to go off with some guy at 14 (Little Mermaid), or fall in love with some guy over a dance (Cinderella), or even better just one kiss and they live happily ever after (Sleeping Beauty). Not exactly realistic view on life, love, or relationships. My little Emma is still too young (16months) to be "into" the Disney Princesses, but I did find myself in a dilemma recently with the TV. I had put on Sesame Street just for fun, and when it ended she started crying. After about 15 minutes of tears and no end in sight I knew I needed to fix the problem. I called Donald who recommended that I put a movie on with our Xbox360 Elite. I had no clue how to operate the Xbox, so through Emma's tears and my frustration, he calmly helped me get a Baby Einstein video on (he recommended I put on Kiki's Delivery Service) Emma was not at all amused with the baby video, so I reluctantly came around to Donald's idea. I put in HayaoMiyazaki's film and Emma loved it! I haven't seen the movie since my brother passed away. He use to put on all the Hayao Miyazaki films when my nieces were little. What a breath of fresh air. Kiki has two parents that love her very much and want the best for her. When she turns 13, as a witch she is suppose to go out into the world and find a town to take care of. And through much determination and believing in herself she becomes loved by her new town, and finds a special (male) friend too! And no, there is not a marriage at the end just a start of a wonderful new friendship. It's amazingly cute, fun and Kiki has the best personality. Definitely someone I wouldn't mind my little Emma looking up to. And the benefit for me is I get to watch a beautiful Hayao Miyazaki film. It is such a wonderfully new fresh inspiration to my art (something that I really needed to pull me out a bit of artistic depression). I had been so afraid to watch all the Miyazaki films since my brother passed away, I just knew I would cry missing him so much. It was hard watching the movie through glossy tears remembering Tim and how he introduced me to such wonderful films, but the beauty and happiness of the film made want want to draw. It was a pleasure drawing while the film was on and Emma was napping, the movie has lovely soft music, almost magical. It was such a great experience. And my art is really seeing such a positive change, something I am proud of. Thank you Hayao Miyazaki! Thank you Tim! And thank you Donald!

I will definately check out the film. It sounds like it will right up my daughter's alley.
I am not a Disney fan even though my daughter LOVES the princesses. We have not banned them from my house, but I do feel I need to find more realistic positive well-rounded female role models for her.
Thanks Suzanne.
